Every Sunday in October, Louisiana State Penitentiary welcomes thousands of visitors to "The Wildest Show in the South!" The Angola Prison Rodeo features events including bull riding, bareback riding, a wild horse race, barrel racing, bull-dogging, wild cow milking, convict poker, and rodeo clowns. During the Guts and Glory Challenge - the rodeo's grand finale - a poker chip is affixed to the forehead of the meanest, toughest Brahma bull available. The object for contestants is to get close enough to the bull to snatch the chip (and escape in one piece). The Arts and Crafts Show, which features hundreds of items handmade by Louisiana State Penitentiary inmates, is almost as popular as the rodeo itself.

Event Details

• 8 am: Gates open
• 9 am–5 pm: Arts and Crafts show booths & food booths open
• 2 pm–4 pm: Rodeo
• Admission: $20; children 2 years and under free as long as they sit on your lap
• Cash and all major credit cards accepted for crafts; cash only for food
• Smoking prohibited; no outside food or ice chests.
• Clear, transparent plastic bag will be permitted to enter. All bags subject to search. Umbrella strollers recommended.
• Buy tickets in advance; event usually sells out
• Lines are long; arrive early
• At Louisiana State Penitentiary, 17544 Tunica Trace, Angola, LA, 70712. At the end of Hwy 66, 25 minutes' drive from St. Francisville in West Feliciana Parish.
